Why a Dietitian and not a Nutritionist? A common (and Important) question!
This is something I get asked all the time and understandably so! In a world where nutrition advice is everywhere (hello TikTok trends and Facebook forums!), it’s easy to get confused about the difference between a Dietitian and a Nutritionist, and why it matters.
As a Registered Dietitian, I’m part of a regulated healthcare profession. This means I’ve completed accredited university training, clinical placements, and must meet ongoing professional standards. I’m qualified to assess, diagnose, and treat dietary and nutritional problems, including those linked to medical conditions. Most importantly, my recommendations are based on scientific evidence, not just trends or personal opinion.
On the other hand, the title “Nutritionist” isn’t always regulated. In many places, anyone can call themselves a nutritionist without any formal education or credentials. While some Registered Nutritionists do hold recognized qualifications and are certified, the title alone doesn’t guarantee this. That’s why it’s so important to know who you're getting your advice from.
If you're seeking trustworthy, personalised nutrition guidance, especially for managing health conditions, always look for a regulated professional like a Registered Dietitian or a certified Registered Nutritionist.
