Sugar feeds Cancer 🍬🩺🩻👩🏼‍⚕️

As a Dietitian working with cancer patients, I see patients at all stages of their cancer journey. Dealing with a cancer diagnosis can be physically, emotionally, and mentally draining. It can be an extremely tough time for everyone along the journey

It is completely normal for someone with a new diagnosis to take straight to the internet and ‘google’ the best way to get you through this tough time. It can give patients some control over the situation and a bit more understanding of what may happen.

Currently 1 in 2 adults in the UK are likely to be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime

Although choosing the best source of information is crucial! Here’s just some of the typical diets I hear on a daily basis working with Cancer patients during treatment:

RED FLAGS

  • Extreme Restrictions – these diets encourage unhealthy habits and they are not sustainable.

  • Fad diets – making wild claims such as pH diet, no sugar, Keto, Paleo, no dairy or vegan to name a few.

  • Buying additional – tea, juices or supplements that claim to change your pH or reduce inflammation!

  • Tips from friends, family, neighbors, work colleagues… ‘this person recommended _______ as they ate only this through their treatment and felt great!’

MORE OF THIS

  • A well balanced and varied diet

  • Regular exercise as you can manage or tolerate

  • you don’t need a strict meal plan to stick to

The most important advice fro cancer patients is to maintain their weight, strength and muscle mass through their treatment. It can become more and more difficult due to side effects of treatment, surgery, becoming unwell etc.
